CBT and Cognitive Behavioural Coaching

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

At Webster Lawlor & Associates we take a practical problem solving approach to helping people overcome the emotional and behavioural blocks that may prevent them from achieving their goals. We have over 21 years experience of working successfully with individuals with a wide variety of problems using CBT.

CBT is based on the premise that people’s emotional and behavioural difficulties are not caused by what happens to them, but by the way they think about what happens to them. This means that emotional pain can be significantly reduced or eliminated altogether if an individuals thinking can be changed to become more evidence based and logical. It is both an effective and efficient way of resolving emotional and behavioural difficulties.

CBT has been the most widely researched of all psychological treatment approaches and a wealth of evidence for its effectiveness has been gathered. CBT was the only form of psychotherapy/ counselling specifically included in the Vision for Change policy document for mental health services published by the Department of Health and Children and is recommended as the treatment of choice for anxiety and depression by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE, UK). In a recently reported review of empirically supported treatments by the American Psychological Society’s Division of Clinical Psychology, Task Force on Psychological Interventions, Cognitive Behavioural interventions were most common to qualify as empirically supported.

CBT is particularly attractive to employers for the treatment of ill/ injured workers as it achieves results quickly. It was designed as a short-term therapy that achieves lasting results typically within 6 - 8 sessions. It’s pragmatic, problem solving approach appeals to both clients and those who refer them. It’s focus on psycho-education, whereby clients learn emotional problem solving skills that they can apply in other areas of their lives and in the future, ensures that results are long-lasting and that the potential for relapse is minimized.

Cognitive Behavioural Coaching

Cognitive Behavioural Coaching is new to Ireland and Webster Lawlor & Associates are delighted to be able to offer this service to individuals who want to improve their effectiveness both at work and in their personal lives.

Cognitive Behavioral Coaching is a practical, action-oriented approach to working through blocks to effectiveness and productivity using a step-by-step methodology which has proven to be effective. While many blocks to personal effectiveness exist in our environment, most result from the way we think about ourselves, others and the world around us. Put simply, changing our thinking can change our lives and how we live them.

At Webster Lawlor & Associates we apply the tools developed for use in CBT to helping people become more effective both personal and professionally by thinking smarter. In our coaching sessions we take a psycho-educational approach so that those who avail of this service learn the skills to become their own coach in the future. We teach people how to examine their own thinking so that they can identify self-limiting beliefs and we give them the tools to change these beliefs to maximise their effectiveness and enjoyment of life.
